McKenzie Method
for Spinal Care

McKenzie Evaluations

Advanced Rehabilitation’s preferred approach to spinal care utilizes the McKenzie method. The McKenzie method is a mechanical based classification system for spinal disorders, which is internationally recognized and supported by many research-based facilities such as the Cleveland Clinic. The McKenzie method is the most progressive approach to conservative spinal care available. The method is based on the principles of Diagnosis, Treatment, and Prevention.

All of our clinicians are certified McKenzie therapists.

Diagnosis

Following a thorough subjective patient history, a McKenzie Evaluation uses a series of repeated movements and/or sustained postures to assess the patient’s pain patterns. These pain patterns and other examination findings from the evaluation are used to classify patients into categories. By classifying patients we can then outline the most effective treatment program/strategy.

Treatment

The appropriate treatment “principle” is derived from the objective findings obtained during the evaluation and is based on “directional preference”. The goal of treatment is to identify pain relieving exercises and to teach the patient how to manage their pain through exercise and postural education. A unique feature of treatment is that the techniques used by the therapist to reduce pain can be used just as effectively by the patient at home. This emphasis on the home exercise program significantly reduces the amount of time a patient will spend in rehabilitation.

Prevention

Prevention is rooted in educating the patient to use exercise during functional activities to protect the spine and avoid reoccurrence of symptoms. In addition to education regarding the basic principles of prevention, the importance of flexibility, body mechanics, and exercises for stability and strengthening are reviewed rounding out the complete rehabilitation program. It teaches the patient life long management skills to prevent spinal pain.

McKenzie Institute International

The McKenzie Institute International has designed a program to recognize those individuals who possess expertise in the method. Through a series of educational courses and passing a comprehensive examination a therapist can become certified in the McKenzie method. The McKenzie Institute can be contacted at 1-800-635-8380 or visit them at www.mckenziemdt.org.

Certified McKenzie Therapists

Our clinicians are credentialed McKenzie therapists, which is an internationally recognized specialization for the treatment of spinal disorders. The McKenzie Method is effective for the conservative management of cervical, thoracic, and lumbar pain experienced from disc protrusion (bulging discs) or herniations. McKenzie treatment may also assist in easing the pain and limitations caused by degenerative disc/joint disease (DDD/DJD), spinal stenosis, sciatica, and/or pinched nerves.
